LTC Industry Leaders Ready to Welcome Afghan Refugees to the Workforce

The American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) is encouraging providers to allow immigrants, especially Afghan refugees, to join the long-term care industry. McKnight’s reports the industry should be willing to make efforts to help these individuals settle down in this country, their new home.

Clifton Porter II, senior vice president of government relations for AHCA/NCAL stated, “together, we can ensure our nation’s seniors receive the highest quality care while creating a bright future for our new Afghan neighbors.” He continued to say, “individuals who are willing to serve our vulnerable residents – especially during a global pandemic – deserve our appreciation and support.”

The White House hosted a discussion with major companies on the Operation Allies Welcome initiative. The goal is to provide aid in the resettlement efforts for Afghan refugees. Organizations such as Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services and International Rescue Committee can help these individuals gain employment in the long-term care industry.

Porter expressed his support for the initiative by stating “providers welcome these newcomers with open arms and do everything in our power to help them through this transition moving forward.”

Industry leaders are offering their support also as this can help alleviate the burdens caused on facilities due to staffing shortages.
